A butta saree gets its name from the small woven motifs — buttas — scattered across the body of the silk, worked in gold or silver zari rather than printed or embroidered on. Each motif is woven into the fabric itself during the weaving process, which is what separates a genuine butta silk saree from a printed imitation. Our butta sarees are handwoven by the same Kanchipuram weaver families we've worked with for generations, using pure mulberry silk and Silk Mark-certified zari — so every peacock, mango, or temple motif you see has actually been woven, thread by thread, not stamped on afterward.
Weave & Design
Butta motifs come in a range of traditional forms — peacocks, mangoes, temple bells, and small geometric buttis — spaced across the body in a density that can range from subtle and sparse to closely scattered for a richer look. A butta saree can be paired with almost any border style: a korvai contrast border for a more formal finish, or a temple border for a classic traditional look. Some pieces in this collection use pure zari throughout the motifs for extra richness, while lighter zari work suits daily festive wear.
Styling
The scattered motif work gives a butta saree a slightly less formal, more everyday-elegant character than a heavy bridal weave — it works well for festive occasions, family functions, and daily drapes without the weight of a full bridal piece. A butta saree with a contrast blouse lets the motif work stand out; for a more classic look, pair it with matching or traditional gold jewellery.
Care & Authenticity
Run a finger over the motifs — genuine zari buttas have a slightly raised, textured feel where the thread is woven in, unlike a flat printed pattern. The silk should carry Silk Mark certification, and the zari should show a faint natural tarnish over time rather than staying artificially bright, which is a sign of synthetic thread. Store and care for your butta saree the same way as any pure Kanjivaram — full guidance is on our Saree Wash & Silk Care page.
