Traditional Kanjivaram

Every saree in this collection is woven in Kanchipuram — not sourced from a trading network, but from the same weaver families we work with directly, generation after generation. Traditional Kanjivaram silk is defined by its korvai construction, where the body and border are woven separately and interlocked by hand, giving the saree its signature contrast border and its weight. Each piece carries Silk Mark certification, confirming pure mulberry silk and genuine zari — no shortcuts, no blends passed off as pure silk.

This collection holds our most classic weaves: temple borders, vairaoosi, butta motifs, and pure zari work, in colours ranging from deep traditional reds and greens to contemporary duotones. Because these are handwoven pieces from a limited network of looms, quantities are naturally limited — once a design sells out, it isn't restocked identically.

Weave & Design

A traditional Kanjivaram saree can be woven in several distinct techniques, each suited to a different look and occasion. Korvai is the classic contrast-border construction most associated with bridal and formal wear. Vairaoosi work creates a fine ripple pattern along the border, often chosen for a more understated traditional look. Butta sarees feature small woven motifs scattered across the body — peacocks, mangoes, temple bells — worked in gold or silver zari. Some pieces in this collection use pure zari throughout for maximum richness, while others favour a lighter zari hand for daily festive wear. None of these techniques is exclusive to this collection — you'll find each represented here alongside sarees that combine two or more.

Styling

A traditional Kanjivaram's structured drape and contrast border make it a natural choice for weddings, temple functions, and festive occasions like Onam or Pongal. Pair a temple-border piece with traditional gold jewellery for a classic bridal look, or let a butta-motif saree with a matching blouse carry a festive day on its own. For wedding season specifically, our bridal collection narrows this range further to pieces woven with heavier zari and larger borders.

Care & Authenticity

Genuine Kanjivaram silk has a distinct weight and a slightly stiff hand when new — a result of the yarn's natural gum, which softens with wear. The zari should feel slightly rough, not perfectly smooth (a sign of synthetic thread), and every piece here carries Silk Mark certification as a guarantee of purity. Store your saree wrapped in muslin away from direct light, and always dry clean rather than wash, to keep the silk and zari looking new for decades.
